Math Tutoring

A Holistic Approach for Learning Challenges

What is Holistic Tutoring?

When a student is struggling with Math, or even other subjects, many times there is something getting in their way.

They could have some anxiety around math or testing and their brain shuts down. Getting at the cause of the anxiety, and addressing it using techniques such as EFT, or relaxation techniques, helps to overcome it, making learning easier.

Of course, improving in math also takes going back over basics and building on them, to raise their confidence.

ADD and ADHD are other causes of problems learning math. A lot of research has shown that we can change the brain and create new or better neuro-pathways so it will function better, that is where Holistic Tutoring comes in.

Here are the Key areas for Holistic Tutoring:

Academic instruction is important, but many times addressing brain health and emotions associated with math needs to be addressed as well.

Academics

Math is like another language.

The method of instruction makes a big difference in how a student understands the material.

The vocabulary of math needs to be explained, and math basics are reviewed in order to build upon them. Using pictures and manipulatives are great tools for explaining math concepts.

Brain Health

The new science of Neuroplasticity says that the brain can change. By looking at scans of the brain, experts are able to see what is going on in different parts of the brain. They can see where there is not enough activity and where there is too much. Using past experience, they can correct these problems and improve the brain's function.

Anxiety and Negative Beliefs

Since any negative associations cause a "fight or flight" response in the brain which makes it harder to do the math, it is important to address the anxiety and clear the negative beliefs.

There are many tools that we can use to address Math Anxiety or Test Anxiety. I have seen them work very well with my students.
